Classical ArtThe term classical, when applied to art, is very general. Classical is not a movement of art, but it can describe the art from several periods and cultures of the past. Someone may use this term loosely when talking about ancient art from the Greeks or Romans, or they may even call art from the Renaissance classical. However, contemporary art that is done in a classical style is actually considered to be neo-classical. Neo-classicism is basically the revival of ancient art styles.
Unlike abstract art that is based on self expression, individualism and free flowing energy and emotion, neo-classical art is very focused and precise. Artists who paint in this style choose a particular movement or style from past cultures and revive it in their paintings. Neo-classicism movements were brought about by artists in almost every century between the 18th to the present. Some believe that Richard Franklin is responsible for pioneering the most recent classical movement beginning in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Here at Cover Your Walls, we offer a few different prints from this gifted artist including Adonis' Dream, Aphrodite's Dream, and To Go Beyond. Much of his art is connected to the styles of the 17th century. Some of his paintings were inspired by 19th century poetry and Greek mythology. Franklin's artwork is an obvious celebration and love of the human figure. His paintings depict soft curves, rich colors, embracing light and timeless emotions. If you love the classic paintings of Degas, you may want to take a look at the works by Deborah Norton and Christopher Grey in our online gallery. Both artists capture the beautiful ballet dancer form while reviving a 19th century art style.
Decorating with Classical Art
Classical art is an ideal choice if your interior décor is made up of empire furniture, ornate accessories, and sheer, white linens. However, there are no rules when it comes to decorating with art. If you love classical prints, but prefer art deco furniture, then mix the two styles together. Framed classical prints can also bring magic and allure to businesses such as restaurants, coffee shops, theatres, bookstores and tea rooms.
